If you’ve ever avoided thinking about “what if” scenarios when it comes to your health, you’re not alone. Advanced care planning can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable, or even unnecessary—especially if you feel healthy. But the truth is, the best time to start is before a health crisis happens.
Ironically, my mother's favorite conversation was her death. Morbid? Maybe, BUT had she not told me all her wishes, what she wanted to happen after she passed, and who was to get what, I would have not a clue on what to do or decisions to make. She made my life easier, even at 46, when she passed to make decisions, she would have made for herself could she have.
Why Sooner Is Better
You’re in control: Planning early means your voice is front and center in every decision.
No pressure: You’re not making choices in the middle of a crisis.
Less stress later: You give your loved one's clear guidance when they need it most.
When to Start
Milestone birthdays: 40, 50, 60 — these are perfect “check-in” ages.
After major diagnoses: Chronic illness, cancer, or any condition that could impact your decision-making.
Before surgery or big medical procedures: Even “routine” ones.
Life changes: Marriage, divorce, children leaving home, or retirement.
First Steps You Can Take Today
Think about your values: What matters most to you if you can’t speak for yourself?
Choose a healthcare proxy: Pick someone you trust to speak for you.
Write it down: Complete an advance directive or living will.
Bottom line: The right time to plan is before you need it. Think of it like insurance for your voice — make sure it’s protected.
